Special Events
Including art in special events not only helps set the stage for the event, it creates a broader context to appreciate both the work and the event’s subject.
“Understanding Your Muslim Neighbor” (co-produced with the Bay County Islamic Society) incorporated a variety of arts and crafts, such as paintings, textiles, woodwork, metalwork, jewelry, and henna tattoos. These gave patrons a feel for Muslim culture, while informational displays provided an overview of Islam.
“The artwork provided by the Bay County Islamic Society was stunning and well-received,” Burris says.
A 1920s-themed event, “Gatsby’s Gathering,” paired live jazz and swing dancing with Art Deco-style art. Taylor Bush Brinson’s bold, geometric designs in blacks, whites, and metallics helped evoke the feel of the Roaring Twenties.
A bonus for the library: WJHG, the local NBC affiliate, ran a news story about the event.
