Publishers
Libraries have long been involved in the process of publishing.
Traditionally, “publishing” refers to producing and distributing printed works, such as books, newspapers and magazines.
More recently, the scope of publishing has widened to include electronic resources, e-books in particular.
Currently, most of what libraries publish can be categorized as:
- Academic publishing
- Publishing patrons
- Literary and art journals
Although academic publishers make up the bulk of library publishing, massive shifts in the publishing industry have increased public libraries’ interest in taking on the publisher role. With public libraries joining their academic counterparts, libraries are poised to play an integral role in the next big phase of the publishing world.
