Autism Friendly Award

Following implementation of UM-NSU CARD’s recommendations in Miami-Dade public libraries, UM-NSU CARD staff conducted a walkthrough of the library branches to assess “appropriate accommodations and a welcoming environment.” This assessment resulted in MDPLS’s receipt of the Autism Friendly Partner award.
UM-NSU CARD Executive Director Dr. Michael Alessandri explains in a November 2021 press release why MDPLS was designated as an Autism Friendly Partner:
Our mission is to optimize the potential of people living with autism and related disabilities and we are eager to help create places and spaces in our community where our clients and families feel a true sense of belonging. The Miami-Dade Public Library System is a wonderful example of an organization that is providing a welcoming, compassionate and inclusive environment for individuals with ASD and related disabilities. We’re proud to call them our partner.
MDPLS Director Ray Baker shares his thoughts on receiving the Autism Friendly award:
I am so appreciative of the work and dedication of our Miami-Dade Public Library employees in this achievement that will make a difference in the lives of neurodiverse individuals and those with autism spectrum disorder.
