In Florida, over one in four adults are at or below Level 1 literacy. Adults need proficient literacy skills to attain high-paying jobs, obtain vocational training and licensing, start and run a business, pursue educational goals, make informed health and financial decisions and stay current with changing technology.

  • Adult Literacy Facts
    ProLiteracy is a nonprofit organization that supports literacy programs through grants, professional development and training.
  • The Florida Literacy Coalition has compiled key information for Florida from the Program for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC).
  • Florida Workforce Needs Study
    This Florida Chamber of Commerce study focuses on the skills that Floridians need to fill the demand for skilled workers in high-paying fields.

Grants and funding

  • Conversation Corps Grants
    Fund conversation groups and classes for those learning English and other languages. Eligible programs include public libraries that assist English-language learners with conversation practice.
  • Florida Humanities
    Funds English for Families, a multi-week series of interactive classes for adults and children.
