Express Reads Project Activities
Activities
Activity 1: Paired Reading
In paired reading, a learner and tutor read the same book and then discuss it together.
This can be a great opportunity to talk about cultural differences, ideas and vocabulary. Depending on the reading level and needs of the learner, the tutor can read out loud while the learner follows along in their own book, the learner and tutor can take turns reading, or they can read independently and come back together for discussion. The emphasis is on reading for pleasure and can be a break from formal instruction.
Activity 2: No Time, No Problem
A short, fun read can be a good way to engage literacy learners. These books can also reengage patrons with less time and attention for reading due to health issues or life demands.
Host a read-in party or let your patrons speed date a selection of books to check out. Mix in with your book displays or match with your own favorite activities. Experiment and share your successes and challenges.
