Florida Memory Launches New Internet Radio Station
Highlights Thousands of Recordings From the Florida Folklife Collection
TALLAHASSEE – The Florida Department of State proudly announces the launch of Florida Memory Radio, a 24 hour streaming Internet radio station featuring a broad range of music from the Florida Folklife Collection. Available to listeners around the world, users can access the station using computers, tablets, or mobile phones, either on the Web at radio.floridamemory.com, or through the State Archives’ Facebook page.
“Florida Memory Radio directly connects Floridians with our state’s remarkable and unique musical heritage,” said Secretary of State Ken Detzner. “This invaluable cultural resource is now accessible on a broader, nationwide scale. Whatever your musical taste, Florida Memory Radio offers a variety of Florida’s rich musical heritage, sure to capture and enrich anyone’s ear.”
Florida Memory is an ongoing Web initiative that promotes awareness, understanding and the use of the State Library and Archives’ collections and services. It enables remote access to unique records that illustrate significant moments in the state's history. It allows educators and students to utilize unique, invaluable historical resources for research and learning. A tremendous online resource providing access to over 550,000 primary records, the Florida Memory website is used by Florida citizens and millions of people worldwide, including: media outlets, historians, librarians, educators, museum and marketing professionals, students and music enthusiasts.
The Florida Folklife Collection is home to over 34,000 recordings of: blues, bluegrass, folk, gospel, and world music, featuring such artists as, Will McLean, Ida Goodson, Etta Baker and Doc Watson. Florida Memory Radio will play these diverse musical selections around the clock, commercial free, allowing listeners to enjoy the rich audio resources of the State Archives of Florida.
