Mission San Luis Hosts Mass in Remembrance of Spanish missions of La Florida
TALLAHASSEE –
On Saturday, January 3, 2014 at 2 p.m. the public is invited to a Commemorative Mass in the reconstructed 17th century Franciscan church at Mission San Luis. Leading the mass will be Most Rev. Gregory L. Parkes who was ordained and installed as the Fifth Bishop of Pensacola-Tallahassee after his appointment by His Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI in 2012. All faiths are welcome to attend and the event is free.
“The Commemorative Mass at Mission San Luis is the perfect time to reflect on the important history of the Spaniards and Apalachee Indians,” said Secretary of State Ken Detzner. “This Mass commemorates the more than 100 Spanish missions that existed in Spanish Florida during the 16th and 17th centuries.”
