Museum of Florida History Launches Thank a Veteran Campaign

TALLAHASSEE –

The Museum of Florida History, part of the Department of State’s Division of Cultural Affairs, is partnering with Moore Communications Group (MCG), the Florida Department of Veterans’ Affairs and Honor Flight to write to heroes throughout the month of November. During this month of Thanksgiving, visitors to the Museum can write a handwritten letter thanking a veteran for their service. From November 11 until November 30 there will be a special letter writing station set up outside of the World War II exhibit in the Museum.

“Veteran’s Day and Thanksgiving offer an ideal opportunity to send a message of thanks to our nation’s veterans,” said Secretary of State Ken Detzner. “This is a great partnership that allows visitors to the Museum of Florida History to write a personal note to thank the incredible men and women who served our country.”

The thank you letters will be collected at the end of the month and delivered to veterans by Honor Flight Tallahassee. Visitors can write thank you letters any day from November 11–November 30, with the exception of Thanksgiving Day, when the Museum is closed. Visitors can also share their experience using #WritetoHeroes on social media.

“The letter writing campaign is a wonderful way to honor Florida’s veterans, especially those World War II veterans who are being honored with trips to Washington, D.C. through the Honor Flight network,” said Florida Department of Veterans’ Affairs Executive Director Mike Prendergast.  “The good will generated by this patriotic partnership is another example of why Florida is the most veteran-friendly state in the nation.”

The Florida Remembers World War II exhibit at the Museum of Florida History opened as a temporary exhibit at the Museum of Florida History on December 7, 2001, the 60th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. It later opened as a permanent exhibit on November 11, 2004.  The exhibit features more than 350 objects—uniforms, military gear, photographs, and personal memorabilia—that tell the stories of the home front, military training, combat, and uncommon valor. Adjacent to the exhibit is a memorial list of more than 4,600 Floridians who lost their lives in military service during the war.  The permanent exhibit is a collaboration between the Museum of Florida History, Florida Department of State, and the Florida Department of Veterans’ Affairs.
