Crane Creek Reserve Golf Course Featured as Florida Historic Golf Trail Course of the Month
TALLAHASSEE –
Secretary of State Ken Detzner announced today that the Crane Creek Reserve Golf Course has been chosen as the featured course on the Florida Historic Golf Trail for the month of February. Crane Creek Reserve Golf Course is located in the city of Melbourne in Brevard County.
“We are proud that Crane Creek Reserve Golf Course is a partner of the Florida Historic Golf Trail,” said Secretary of State Ken Detzner. “This short course is a true gem in Central Florida that offers a great game for everyone from the beginning golfer to the advanced player.”
The City of Melbourne opened a 6-hole golf course in 1920. As the game and the course became more popular, it was decided that a complete 18-hole golf course was needed. In 1926, renowned golf course architect Donald Ross was commissioned to design a new 18-hole layout, and the golf course officially opened in 1928. Today, the 18-hole, par-71 Crane Creek Reserve Golf Course features four sets of tees playing from 4,600 to 5,800 yards.
In the mid 1920s, along the banks of the Crane Creek canal, which runs through the golf course, geologists found artifacts dating back to 10,000 to 8,000 BC including fossilized bones of a mastodon.
"We are so very pleased to be working with the Florida Department of State on the Florida Historic Golf Trail,” said Kevin Briski, Director of Parks, Recreation and Golf. “It is an extraordinary honor for the Crane Creek Reserve Golf Course, originally called the Melbourne Municipal Golf Course, to be designated the February 2015 featured golf course on the Florida Historic Golf Trail. From mastodons to Donald Ross to President Harding, Crane Creek Reserve Golf Course represents an important part of Melbourne's and our States history."
