Temporary Closure of the Museum of Florida History
TALLAHASSEE –
Beginning Monday, April 6, 2015 the Museum of Florida History will be closing as part of an ongoing renovation project at the R. A. Gray Building. The renovations are part of a revitalization project occurring on the plaza above the Museum. The Museum lobby will remain accessible and includes the Florida Highwaymen Paintings, Florida’s History Shop, and the Egg Express Café. All other areas will be closed until July 2015.
Special care is being taken to preserve and protect the artifacts on display in the Museum. As a result, the Museum has removed the artifacts beneath the construction area.
“As the official state history museum of Florida, we take great pride in caring for, and preserving, our artifacts,” said Secretary of State Ken Detzner. “These artifacts have been removed as a precautionary measure and will be back on display for the public in July of this year.”
Upon reopening in July, the Museum will have an addition to the permanent exhibit, Forever Changed: La Florida 1513–1821. This addition is the second half of the Forever Changed exhibit, which opened in 2012. It explores a dynamic period in history—from the meeting and interaction of vastly different native and European cultures to Florida’s adoption as a United States territory and eventual statehood. A replica fort, a Spanish colonial house, colorful murals, and sounds of daily activities transport visitors back in time to explore a period that changed Florida forever. Touchable reproductions and digital games aid visitors in learning about Florida’s colonial history.
For updates on the renovations, follow the Museum’s social media pages on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram. The Museum’s website will also be updated throughout the renovation project. For more information, visit museumoffloridahistory.com or call 850.245.6400.
