The Museum of Florida History Hosts the 35th Annual Capital City Quilt Show Sentimental Journey

TALLAHASSEE, Fla –

Secretary of State Ken Detzner invites the public to the 35th Annual Capital City Quilt Show: Sentimental Journey, which will be on display August 4 through September 24 at the Museum of Florida History. The public is also invited to attend the opening reception of the show on August 3, 2017 from 5:30–7:30 p.m. at the Museum of Florida History. The Museum hosts the exhibit in partnership with Quilters Unlimited of Tallahassee.

“This annual exhibit showcases the highest level of skill and excellence in quilting,” said Secretary Detzner. “The Museum has partnered with Quilters Unlimited of Tallahassee for 35 years, and the pieces on display will astound visitors with their beautiful artistry and intricate details. I encourage residents and visitors to visit the Museum of Florida History to see this fantastic exhibit.”

Traditional components of the quilt show include awards selected by the members of Quilters Unlimited of Tallahassee, a Visitor’s Choice Award selected by the public, and a silent auction that funds charitable initiatives of the guild. Quilters are on hand to answer questions and provide more information about quilting and the examples on display. A scavenger hunt and magnetic quilt game are available for young visitors.

Each year the show highlights the Opportunity Quilt, which is designed and constructed by members of the guild. The featured 2017 Opportunity Quilt is Sentimental Journey. Karen Kunz and members of Quilters Unlimited designed the quilt to represent the theme of this year’s show. The work features two common scrap quilt patterns, Nine Patch and Hour Glass, made from donated fabric from members’ fabric stashes. By making a small contribution to Quilters Unlimited, visitors can qualify for a chance to win the Opportunity Quilt.

“We are delighted to partner with the Florida Department of State and the Museum of Florida History to present the 35th Annual Capital City Quilt Show,” said Quilt Show Chair Betty Rinkel. “The Museum does an excellent job of displaying the works to the public so that everyone can experience the beauty and art of quilting.”

The quilts are on display at the Museum of Florida History from August 4 to September 24. The quilts are also displayed online at pinterest.com/museumflhistory. Admission to the show is free and free parking is available in the garage adjacent to the R. A. Gray Building.
