Mission San Luis Hosts the Consul General of Spain for a Free Presentation on the Impact of Spain’s Heritage in Florida

On Thursday, April 4 Mission San Luis is hosting Cándido Creis Estrada, the Consul General of Spain in Miami, as the special guest speaker for the last event in the 2018-2019 Colonial Spanish Florida History Series to discuss Spain’s legacy in the United States and Florida. The Consul General’s presentation, Spanish Culture Alive in Florida: The Impact of Spain’s Heritage Today, begins at 6:30 p.m. A reception in his honor starts at 5:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

“The Department is thrilled and honored to welcome the Consul General of Spain in Miami to Mission San Luis,” said Secretary of Laurel M. Lee. “The Consul General’s informative presentation will be a great opportunity to learn more about the long-standing history between Florida and Spain and its lasting influence on our culture.”

The Consul General will speak about Spain’s legacy in the United States and other aspects of the Spanish presence in Florida from 1512 to 1821. His presentation also marks the 500th anniversary of the birth of the Adelantado, Don Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, Governor of La Florida.

The joint lecture series on Colonial Spanish Florida History began in September 2018 with the PBS documentary, Secrets of Spanish Florida, and was followed up with appearances by noted historians and archaeologists who contributed their expertise to the documentary.
