Redland Golf and Country Club Featured as Florida Historic Golf Trail Course of the Month

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. –

Secretary of State Ken Detzner announced today that the Redland Golf and Country Club, located in the community of Redland in Miami-Dade County, has been chosen as the featured course on the Florida Historic Golf Trail for the month of January.

"We are pleased to feature the Redland Golf and Country Club as a partner on the Florida Historic Golf Trail," said Secretary Detzner. "Located in a tropical climate and surrounded by rich farmland, the Redland Golf and Country Club has been a part of the community for more than 60 years."

In the 1940s when Joe L. Burton, a Homestead department store owner who had never had a golf club in his hand, started to raise money for an 18-hole championship golf course in the Redland District, many said it couldn't be done. But Burton, along with a handful of men, raised $40,000 in four months by selling memberships at $100 each. In 1947, the club retained the services of golf course architect Red Lawrence to design an 18-hole course and A.W. Lindgren Land Clearing Company was contracted to clear the property. Only nine holes were built at that time and it would be two decades before the second nine holes were built in the early 1960s.

Today, the Redland Golf and Country Club is an 18-hole, par-72 golf course featuring four sets of tees playing from 5,600 to 6,600 yards. This medium-length layout provides a fun but challenging golfing experience.

"Redland Golf and Country Club is excited and honored to be selected as the featured course for January 2019 for the Florida Department of State's Florida Historic Golf Trail," said Kelly Davis, General Manager at Redland Golf and Country Club. "If you love this sport as much as we do, and would enjoy playing and socializing with some of the finest and friendliest people that South Florida has to offer, consider playing at the Redland!"
