Florida Secretary of State Laurel M. Lee Elected to Serve on National Board

Secretary of State Laurel M. Lee announced today her election as Secretary for the Executive Board of the National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS). NASS is the nation's oldest, nonpartisan professional organization for public officials. Appointed annually by the NASS President and approved by member vote, the NASS Executive Board is the chief governing body of NASS.

“I am honored to have been elected to serve as a member of the executive board by my peers,” said Secretary Lee. “I look forward to working with my colleagues from across the country to continue to secure our nations’ elections, to effectively serve and promote businesses and corporations, and to support the many other programs and services led by Secretaries of State.”

NASS made the announcement of the selection of officers during the final day of the NASS Summer Conference in Des Moines, Iowa, last week. Secretary Lee is one of eleven members nationwide selected to serve a one-year term ending at the conclusion of the 2022 NASS Summer Conference.

“I’m pleased to have Secretary Lee as Secretary of the NASS executive board,” said Louisiana Secretary of State and NASS President Kyle Ardoin. “I look forward to working with Secretary Lee over the next year and know that her sterling record as Secretary of State in the third largest state will contribute to finding innovative solutions to the prevailing issues facing our states and nation in the coming years.”

BIOGRAPHY

Secretary Lee was appointed by Governor Ron DeSantis as Florida’s 36^th Secretary of State and began serving in February 2019. 

During her tenure as Secretary of State, Secretary Lee has worked to strengthen the state’s elections infrastructure and cybersecurity defenses, to increase voter registration and participation, and to ensure accurate, fair, and secure elections in Florida. 

In addition to her duties as Florida’s Chief Elections Officer, Secretary Lee serves as Florida’s Chief Cultural Officer, Chief Protocol Officer, and oversees the Divisions of Arts and Culture, Historical Resources, Corporations, Libraries and Information Services, and the Office of International Affairs.

Secretary Lee previously served as a Circuit Court Judge in Florida’s Thirteenth Judicial Circuit in Hillsborough County, Florida. During her time as Circuit Court Judge, Secretary Lee presided in the Circuit Civil Division, the Civil Appellate Division and the Domestic Relations Division. Prior to serving as a Judge, Secretary Lee was an Assistant United States Attorney in the Middle District of Florida. She also previously served as an Assistant Federal Public Defender in the Middle District of Florida, as a federal judicial law clerk, and spent time in private practice.

Secretary Lee received her Bachelor’s Degree and a Juris Doctorate from the University of Florida, where she was a member of Florida Blue Key. She was inducted into the University of Florida Hall of Fame in 1999.
