THOMAS STEVENS PURE SILK WOVEN BOOK MARKERS Bookmark & Envelope, 1876
Agents of Thomas Stevens’s weaving company sold novelty woven goods at the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. This silk bookmark features a popular temperance tale that would have been familiar to many exhibition-goers. In the story, a bar owner refuses to allow a customer to eat some juicy cherries that were intended as a special treat for the owner’s family. Driven by a desire to purchase such goods for his own family, the customer gives up alcohol in order to afford them.
