Elgin Jumper: A Seminole’s Story at the Museum of Florida History

Tallahassee –

Tonight beginning at 6:30 p.m., the Department of State’s Museum of Florida History presents the one-man show, Elgin Jumper: A Seminole's Story. Elgin Jumper, a member of the Seminole Tribe of Florida, is a poet, writer, and painter. Mr. Jumper, at times humorous, at times powerful, recounts his story, and his highs and lows, while spotlighting his writing and artwork. The program begins with light refreshments at 6:30 p.m., followed by Elgin Jumper’s performance at 7:00.

“The arts have long served as a vehicle for preserving culture,” said Secretary of State Ken Detzner. “We are very glad to have Mr. Jumper at the Museum to talk about his art, life, and culture.”

The program complements the temporary exhibit, Guy LaBree: Painted Stories of the Seminoles, which is on display until January 29, 2017. The exhibit contains thirty-eight original and reproduction paintings, objects from LaBree’s personal Seminole collection, his easel, palette, and other objects from his studio. The artwork includes many of his Seminole-themed paintings and others that attest to his love of the outdoors. They span a range of subjects from Seminole lifestyles, legends, and history to nature scenes.
