The 34th Annual Capital City Quilt Show Opens at the Museum of Florida History
Tallahassee –
The Museum of Florida History and Quilters Unlimited of Tallahassee are proud to present the 34th Annual Capital City Quilt Show. The 2016 show, By the Water’s Edge, opens July 29 and continues through September 11. This annual exhibit features more than 40 hand-crafted and machine-made contemporary quilts, ranging from small wall hangings to bed quilts.
“We are excited to share these beautiful fiber arts for the public to enjoy,” said Secretary of State Ken Detzner. “Visitors from around the Southeast, including Alabama, Georgia, and Florida are encouraged to come to the Museum to view this show and display of craftsmanship.”
Included in the show are a display of challenge quilts, a new hands-on magnetic quilt block activity for children and adults, and slide shows projected on two walls. One slide show informs visitors about the Quilters Unlimited guild’s community activities, and the other is a catalog of quilts from the collections of the Museum of Florida History.
Traditional components of the quilt show include awards selected by the members of Quilters Unlimited of Tallahassee, a Visitor’s Choice Award selected by public vote, and a silent auction that funds charitable initiatives of the guild. Quilters are on hand to answer questions and provide more information about quilting and the examples on display. A scavenger hunt is available for young visitors.
Educational activities offered during the show include the 2nd Saturday Family Programs on August 13, and September 10. Quilts in the show are also available for viewing on the Museum’s Pinterest page, which can be found at pinterest.com/museumflhistory.
Each year the show highlights the Opportunity Quilt, which is designed and constructed by members of the guild. The 2016 Opportunity Quilt is titled Just Beachy and is made with bright modern fabrics. By making a small contribution to Quilters Unlimited, visitors can qualify for a chance to win the opportunity quilt.
