Food Cultivation and Economies

Florida's climate has always made it a fertile setting for food cultivation. Mild winters make for a long growing season and and a hospitable climate for livestock. Native peoples developed unique ways to take advantage of this environment. Food cultivation in Florida only continued to grow throughout history, from large scale sharecropping operations to small wartime victory gardens and much more. Today citrus is recognized as Florida's signature crop and the state provides over half of the nation's total citrus production. Florida also as a large cattle industry and produces many other types of produce.
