What is Business Identity Theft?
Identity theft is a crime that affects over 9 million people every year, according to the Federal Trade Commission. It impacts many consumers around the country and in Florida. However, consumers are no longer the only targets of identity thieves.
Business identity theft (also known as corporate or commercial identity theft) affects numerous businesses worldwide.
In terms of business identity theft, criminals hijack a business identity and use it to establish lines of credit with banks and retailers. With these lines of credit, the identity thieves purchase commercial electronics, home improvement materials, gift cards, and other items that can be bought and exchanged for cash or sold with relative ease.
